This course is recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training; and is part of the AIEC “Illinois Rural Electric Apprenticeship Program”.   This course is recommended for second year IREAP apprentices.

REMINDERThis class is held in conjunction with URD School and is recommended for 2nd year IREAP participants.  If you have already registered for URD School, then you do not need to register for this class.  Any apprentices that have previously attended URD School before 2019, need to attend this class as part of their IREAP requirements. 


School Overview:

OSHA’S Excavation Standard requires a competent person to inspect the excavations, adjacent areas and protective systems for “evidence of a situation that could result in possible cave-ins, indications of failure of protective systems, hazardous atmospheres, or other hazardous conditions prior to the start of work and as needed throughout the shift”.

The seminar will cover:

  • OSHA’S requirements for excavations
  • The necessary pre-work requirements such as:
    • Notifying the utility company
    • Testing the soil
    • Selecting the appropriate protective system
  • Appropriate personal protective equipment for trenching and shoring
  • The correct way to install and remove protective equipment
  • How to get in and out of the trench
  • Excavation jobsite hazards such as:
    • Traffic
    • Spoil piles
    • Other surface hazards
    • Falling loads
    • Water problems
  • Emergencies such as hazardous air and emergency rescues
  • Trench inspection requirements

School Details:

Participants should bring:

  • Hard hat
  • Work boots
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves

Registration is from 8:30 – 9:00 am at the AIEC.

Training will begin with registration and the classroom portion at the AIEC in the board room.  The room will be set up for social distancing.  Masks will be required.  Following the classroom portion, students will need to drive to the lineman training yard at LLCC where the class will resume for the outside hands-on training.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations made prior to the registration deadline will be not be charged. Cancellations made after the registration deadline, but within 48 hours of the school will be charged at 50%. Cancellations thereafter/no shows will be charged the full school amount. Substitutions are allowed.
